Who is Tomato Energy?
Tomato Energy was a small independent supplier based in Basingstoke, serving around 15,300 households and 8,400 businesses.
It promoted transparent pricing and offered solar export tariffs to customers who generated their own energy. After being placed under investigation by Ofgem earlier in 2025, the business has now ceased trading.
Who is Taking Over Tomato Energy Customers?
Ofgem has appointed British Gas as the Supplier of Last Resort. This means British Gas will now take over all Tomato Energy accounts. The transfer has already begun, and British Gas has confirmed that:
- Your energy supply continues without interruption
- Credit balances for domestic customers are protected
- Customers will be placed on a standard tariff initially
- No exit fees will apply if you choose to move to a different supplier later
British Gas will contact all former Tomato Energy customers once your new account is set up. You don’t need to contact them at this stage.
What Tomato Energy Customers Need to do Today
There are three quick actions:
- Take a meter reading now – Photograph your gas and electricity readings in case you need proof later.
- Download recent bills or statements – Save PDFs or screenshots as evidence of any credit.
- Don't try to switch supplier yet – Wait until British Gas has completed the account transfer. Switching too early might delay any refund of credit.
Once the transfer is complete, you’re free to shop around and move to a more favourable business or domestic tariff.
What Happens to Your Tomato Energy Tariff
British Gas will initially place customers on their standard tariff. Standard rates are usually higher than fixed-term business contracts. Once British Gas contacts you, you will be free to look at better deals and switch with no exit fees.
For business customers, this moment matters. Many companies end up with default rates and pay far more than necessary. Reviewing the tariff as soon as the transfer finishes can save a significant amount.
What Happens if I Have Solar Export Tariffs with Tomato Energy?
If you exported energy through Tomato Energy, unfortunately, that part of your agreement won’t transfer automatically. Once your account moves to British Gas, you’ll need to set up a new export agreement separately.
How to Switch Your Tomato Energy Tariff Quickly
Once the new supplier contacts you, you’re free to look for a new tariff. Comparing properly makes the biggest difference to price. To secure a better business electricity contract:
- Gather usage data and meter reads
- Compare more than just the unit rate
- Check standing charges and contract length
- Avoid rolling onto default out-of-contract rates
Most businesses overpay because they don’t review their tariff on time. Don’t be one of them. This is your opportunity to take control.
Switching to a Better Tariff After the Transfer from Tomato Energy
When British Gas confirms your new account, that is the time to compare. To secure the best possible business electricity contract, you’ll need your usage information, meter reads and a copy of your latest bill.
Check the unit rate, standing charge and contract length so that you’re comparing like for like. Many businesses roll onto default out-of-contract rates simply because they do not review their tariff in time. This is your opportunity to take control of your domestic energy or business energy bill.
